Trees add a lot to a property. But when they’re overgrown, damaged, or in the wrong place, they quickly become a problem and not one you want to leave too long.
At Price Tree & Garden Services, we carry out tree work across Hertfordshire for homeowners, landlords, and commercial clients. Tree removal, pruning, stump grinding, hedge trimming we cover it all, and we work to a standard we’re genuinely proud of.
We’re a local team. We know the county well, we understand the type of work that comes up in this area, and we’re used to dealing with everything from a single garden tree to large-scale site clearances.
If you’ve got a tree job that needs doing, we’ll come out, take a look, and give you a straight quote. No call centres, no hidden costs.
Sometimes a tree needs to come down. It might be dead, diseased, leaning dangerously, or simply too close to a building to leave where it is.
We handle tree removal right across Hertfordshire from single garden trees to larger removals on commercial sites. Before we start, we plan the job properly. That means looking at what’s around the tree, how it needs to come down, and the safest way to do it.
Once the work is done, we clear everything away. You won’t be left with a pile of branches and a mess to sort out yourself.
A tree that hasn’t been pruned in a few years can become a real issue. Branches start crossing, rubbing, or growing toward buildings. The canopy gets too dense and starts blocking light.
Regular pruning sorts all of that out. We remove what needs to go, improve the shape of the tree, and leave it in a much healthier condition. We also carry out crown thinning and pollarding for trees that have outgrown their space but don’t need to come down completely.
Once a tree is down, the stump is often forgotten about until it becomes a problem. Stumps are a trip hazard, they take up usable space, and they can attract pests if left to rot in the ground.
We grind stumps down below ground level using professional equipment. It’s quicker than most people expect, and the result is a clean, level area you can turf over, pave, or use however you need. We also carry compact machinery for gardens and sites where access is tight.
Hedges need regular attention to stay looking their best. Left too long, they spread outward, lose their shape, and become much harder to bring back under control.
We trim hedges cleanly and to the shape you want. Whether it’s a small front garden hedge or a long boundary hedge running the length of a commercial property, we leave it looking neat and well-maintained. We also clear away all the cuttings so the job is properly finished when we leave.
Storm damage can happen fast. A heavy branch comes down overnight, a tree starts leaning after strong winds, or something falls and blocks access to your property.
When that happens you need someone who can get out quickly and make the situation safe. We cover emergency tree work across Hertfordshire and aim to respond as fast as possible. We assess what needs dealing with first, work through it safely, and let you know if any follow-up work is needed once the immediate issue is resolved.
Overgrown land can hold up building work, put off buyers, and make a property difficult to manage. We work with landlords, developers, and estate agents across Hertfordshire who need land cleared and ready to use.
We handle everything from tree removal and stump grinding to clearing dense vegetation and hauling waste off site. We work to agreed timescales and keep things moving so your project doesn’t get delayed waiting for the land to be sorted.
We cover a wide range of tree and hedge work across the county. Here’s what we can help with.
Most people get in touch when something has been on their mind for a while. A tree that’s grown too close to the house. A hedge that’s taken over the front garden. A stump that’s been sitting there since the previous owners had a tree taken down.
Whatever the situation, we’ll come out and have a proper look before we give you any advice. We won’t recommend work that doesn’t need doing, and we won’t rush you into anything. You’ll get an honest assessment and a clear price then it’s entirely your decision.
We work in all kinds of properties across Hertfordshire. Older houses with big established trees, newer builds with limited garden access, rural properties with large plots we’re used to all of it.
Commercial tree work tends to come with tighter deadlines and more people depending on the job being done on time. We understand that, and we plan our work around it.
We regularly work with landlords who need overgrown gardens brought back under control between tenancies. Property developers who need a site cleared before groundwork starts. Estate agents managing properties where the outdoor spaces have been neglected.
The work itself is the same high standard we bring to every job. The difference with commercial clients is that we’re also mindful of the wider project keeping access clear, working efficiently, and communicating clearly so you’re never left wondering where things are up to.
If you manage multiple properties across Hertfordshire and need a reliable team you can call on regularly, we’re worth having in your contacts.
Most people don’t think about planning rules until they’ve already started making plans. When it comes to trees, it’s worth checking first because getting it wrong can lead to a significant fine.
Here’s what you need to know before any tree work is carried out in Hertfordshire.
A Tree Preservation Order usually referred to as a TPO is put in place by the local council to protect specific trees they consider to have value to the local area. That might be because of the tree’s age, its size, its species, or simply its contribution to the local landscape.
If a TPO is in place, you cannot cut down, prune, or carry out any significant work on that tree without getting written permission from the council first. This applies to the whole tree not just removing it entirely.
Carrying out work on a protected tree without permission is a criminal offence. Fines can run into thousands of pounds.
Hertfordshire has a large number of designated Conservation Areas particularly around towns like St Albans, Hertford, Hitchin, and Berkhamsted.
If your property sits within a Conservation Area, different rules apply even if the tree itself doesn’t have a TPO. You’re required to give the council six weeks’ notice before carrying out any significant tree work. That notice period gives them time to assess the tree and decide whether a TPO should be applied.
It sounds straightforward, but a lot of homeowners don’t realise this applies to them until after the fact.
If you’re unsure whether your tree is protected, we can help you figure that out before any work begins. Hertfordshire County Council and the relevant district councils hold records of TPOs, and we’re familiar with the process of checking and applying where needed.
We’ve dealt with plenty of jobs across Hertfordshire where TPOs or Conservation Area rules were involved. It adds a step to the process, but it’s manageable and it’s far better than finding out after the work is done.
If you want to check before booking anything, just give us a call and we’ll talk it through with you.
We work across the whole of Hertfordshire from the larger towns to smaller villages and rural properties in between.
Our team is out across the county most days, so we know the roads, the access challenges, and the types of properties that come up in different parts of Hertfordshire. Here are the main areas we cover:
We also cover the surrounding villages and rural areas that sit between these towns. If your property is slightly off the beaten track, that’s not a problem. We’re used to working in locations that aren’t always easy to get to.
We regularly work across the following Hertfordshire postcode districts:
If your town or village isn’t listed here, don’t assume we can’t help. Our coverage across Hertfordshire is wide, and we take on jobs in areas that fall outside our usual patch if the job suits us.
Give us a call on +44 7490080010 and we’ll let you know straight away. If we can get to you, we’ll arrange a free visit at a time that suits you.
We’re not going to fill this section with promises about being “the best” or “second to none.” That’s not how we work.
What we can tell you is what our customers actually get when they book with us and let you make up your own mind.
It sounds basic, but it matters more than anything else. We show up when we say we will, we do the work we quoted for, and we leave the site clean when we’re done.
No shortcuts. No leaving debris for you to deal with. No vague answers when you ask a question about the job.
Tree work can feel like a big thing to hand over to someone you’ve never used before. We get that. So we make sure the experience from first call to final tidy-up is one you’d recommend to someone else.
We know most people are busy. Booking a tradesperson, being home for a visit, chasing quotes it all takes time.
We try to make it as easy as possible. We’re straightforward to get hold of, we give clear timeframes, and we don’t disappear once the quote has been sent. If something changes on the day or we spot something during the job that’s worth flagging, we tell you we don’t just carry on and hope you don’t notice.
That’s the kind of team we are. It’s why a lot of our work in Hertfordshire comes through word of mouth.

There’s no standard price for tree removal because no two jobs are the same. The cost depends on how big the tree is, where it’s sitting on the property, how easy it is to access, and what needs to happen with the waste once it’s down.
A straightforward removal in an open garden will cost considerably less than taking down a large tree that’s hemmed in by a building or fence. The only reliable way to get an accurate figure is to have someone come out and look at it in person.
We offer free site visits and quotes across Hertfordshire with no obligation to go ahead.
It depends on the tree and where your property sits. If the tree has a Tree Preservation Order on it, you’ll need written approval from your local council before any work can take place. The same applies if your property is within a designated Conservation Area you’ll need to give the council six weeks’ notice before starting.
It’s always worth checking before you commit to anything. We can help you look into whether your tree is protected before any work begins, so there are no surprises further down the line.
Most stumps take less time to remove than people expect. A small to medium stump in an accessible garden can often be ground down in under an hour. Larger stumps or those with extensive root systems will naturally take longer.
Ground conditions and access also play a part. A stump in the middle of an open lawn is much quicker to deal with than one wedged against a wall or in a narrow side passage. When we come out to quote, we’ll give you a realistic idea of how long the job will take.
For most species, late autumn through to early spring is the best window. Trees are dormant during this period, which means pruning causes less stress to the tree and the risk of disease entering through fresh cuts is lower.
One thing worth bearing in mind is bird nesting season, which typically runs from March through to August. During this time, it’s important to check for active nests before any pruning work starts. Disturbing an active nest is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act.
If you’re unsure about timing, give us a call and we’ll advise based on the specific tree and what needs doing.
Yes. Storm damage and fallen trees don’t follow a schedule, so we aim to respond to emergency calls as quickly as possible across the county.
If a tree has come down on your property, a branch has split and is hanging loose, or something looks unstable after bad weather, call us straight away. We’ll assess the situation, make it safe, and talk you through what needs to happen next.
